MAN'S INHUMANITY TO MAN

MAKES COUNTLESS THOUSANDS MOURN

Epitaph of Lieutenant Ernest Cecil Steele, Heudicourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France
I’m a Belgian based photographer, intrigued by general history but most of all by the history of the Great War in all its aspects. Started this project in 2017 along with the misses - who does the editing, design and is by far the best critic in the world (or at least in my world).

Besides walking and visiting the former battlefields and cemeteries, I’m doing a lot of research at home. I try to read as much as possible on a daily basis using military history and service records, diaries and maps.

Throughout the years I developed a strong interest for the military actions during the 3rd battle of Ypres and for people born in Belgium who fought within the allied army - for example in Canadian or Australian battalions. But hey, even the story of a cook who died peeling patatos on a ship can be the start of months of research.

Why do we do this? Well, we want to keep the war’s history alive and more specific the stories of the soldiers who fought against each other in conditions that we can’t even imagine. And of course also for the love of photography and travelling.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us with your own story about a relative.
